Working in a Series with Chris Volpe

MEDIUM: Painting

ALL LEVELS

Discover how working in series can clarify your artistic voice and deepen your creative practice. Painting low-stakes multiples on paper will move us quickly into generating visual ideas and new directions for identifying and building a body of personally meaningful work. Explore creative and written exercises designed to bypass self-doubt and spark new possibilities that break you out of old patterns and thought-feelings that might be holding you back. The ultimate goal is to help you find your “voice,” to discover why art matters to you and what kind of artist you are or want to be, and to create strong and meaningful art with originality and feeling.

Any medium is acceptable, be it painting, drawing, textile art, quilting, even music.  You’ll learn written and creative exercises designed to bypass self-doubt and spark new possibilities.  Note that technique will not be taught; key principles of design and composition will be shared, but this is primarily about finding yourself as a creative individual and turning that into art that “works” for you and for an audience.

Level: advanced-beginner to advanced.

Most of your series building work will be done out of class. We’ll use our class time for lessons, demonstrations, discussions, and critiques, and then you’ll go off and make your paintings. We will also use a private Facebook group page for sharing our images.

Over the course's five weeks, you will make 18 small paintings and three larger works answering to the definition of a series = a body of work uniform in size, orientation, materials, and ideally (but not necessarily) theme.
