Medium:  Collage & 3D Paper and Cardboard Constructions

SIX-WEEK CLASS

Wednesdays, 1 pm to 4 pm

October 7 - November 11, 2020

A REAL-TIME CLASS WITH LIVE MODEL THROUGH ZOOM VIDEO MEETING.

Working from a clothed model posing live on Zoom, we will make cut-paper and cut-cardboard collages and paper and cardboard constructions of the figure.  Prior to each meeting with the model, the instructor will introduce the week’s exercises by email and give a detailed list of supplies needed for the session (see the supply list linked below for an overview).  At the beginning of each live model session, the instructor will briefly review the exercises for the day before turning the screen over to the model, who will hold short and long poses, depending on the exercises for that day.  Exercises will encourage you to focus on shape and to experiment with materials and color.  In addition to the sessions with the model, this class will include two meetings to “check in” and discuss the work made in previous weeks.  Slideshows of the work of modern and contemporary artists will supplement the meetings.  This class is intended as a springboard for your own artistic practice, rather than as an introduction to anatomy or a specific method of working; however, beginners are welcomed and encouraged!  A computer, laptop, or large-screen tablet is advisable for Zoom meetings, as adequately viewing the model on a smartphone screen poses a challenge.

An additional model fee of $25 will be paid to the model directly.

The class schedule is as follows:

Date:   10/7: Speed collages with the model (short poses and limited “palette” of collage papers).

Date:   10/14: Portrait collages with the model (learning to edit and simplify).

Date:   10/21: Group discussion of work made during weeks 1 and 2.

Date:  10/28: Paper & cardboard collages with the model (breaking out of the rectangle).

Date:   11/4: Paper & cardboard constructions with the model (thinking in three dimensions).

Date:   11/11: Group discussion of work made during weeks 4 and 5.
