Printmaking with Kate Hanlon - White Line Woodblock Printmaking and Beyond

All Levels

Medium: Woodblock Printmaking

Instructor: Kate Hanlon

The white line woodcut, also known as the Provincetown Print, is a uniquely American form of printmaking, invented by artists working in Provincetown in the early 1900s. In this method, beautiful multicolor prints are printed by hand using a single block, eliminating the need for a press or complicated registration methods. Students will have opportunity to learn traditional techniques of design, carving, and printing, and expand upon the tradition with creative inking and printing options to create contemporary interpretations of the medium. Explore by adding a line block, carving with a Dremel tool or other nontraditional mark-making tools, or jig sawing your blocks into creative shapes, all in the spirit of experimentation. Participants will leave with a number of prints, with newfound skills and appreciation of the process.

Woodblock printing is the oldest form of printmaking, dating to the year 200 AD in China, and it's still relevant today, produced in much the same way. This workshop provides an introduction to the long tradition of printing from wood, from tool selection and care, design and transfer to the block, carving and printing on an etching press. Participants will be encouraged to explore mark making using traditional and non-traditional tools, and develop their creative ideas into dynamically expressive woodcuts!

Join established printmaker Kate Hanlon, who will teach this two-day woodblock workshop to introduce our new printmaking studio at Concord Art. Equipped with a 24x48 in. Takach printing press, we are happy to expand our education offerings to our wonderful artist community and add classes and workshops in printmaking to our program.

Please note: this workshop takes place in Concord Art's new print studio and our regular classroom. The workshop is limited to 10 participants!
