Description

Introduction to Japanese Color Woodblock Printmaking

All Levels

Medium: Relief Printmaking

Instructor: Matt Brown

The Japanese developed woodblock printing using water as a medium, brushes to apply colors to the blocks, and a hand-held baren instead of a press to transfer colors from the carved blocks to the papers. This is low tech, non-toxic printmaking. This workshop is organized to offer a comprehensive introduction to the wonderful range of tools, techniques, and materials involved in this process. Matt Brown will teach how to complete multi-color prints while engaging with aspects of design, carving, and printing. There is an emphasis on sharing tricks and techniques that may be adapted to other art-making, for example watercolor painting or western style printmaking. This class is limited to 8 students! (There will be an additional $75 materials fee directly paid to the instructor!)
