Artist Talks

Summary

Join us on November 8 at 6:30 pm when author Daniel Bullen will talk about the marriage between Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe, who were married from 1924 until Stieglitz’ death in 1946.  Through creative downpours and droughts, through affairs and through nervous breakdowns, across great distances, artistic styles and temperaments, their enduring marriage describes the intersection of great individual talent and great devotion, and constitutes a work of art in itself.

Description

Artists are famously rewarding but also difficult lovers.  When two first-rank artists pair up, the complex interplay of creativities can lead to great works of art—and the competition of creative egos can lead to great personal tragedies—both for the artists themselves, and for the lovers who are drawn into their circles.

The talk will be accompanied by a slide show of the works their relationship generated, and it will be followed by discussion.

Daniel Bullen is the author of The Love Lives of the Artists: Five Stories of Creative Intimacy (Counterpoint Press, 2011), and The Dangers of Passion: The Transcendental Friendship of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller (Levellers Press, 2012).  He lives in western Massachusetts.
