The Portrait as Inspiration

Students will investigate both the formal and conceptual aspects of portraiture. Using models and reference photos, we will explore anatomy, proportion, shading and facial expression using a variety of drawing media including pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, pastel and colored pencils. Some drawing experience is helpful but not required. Basic drawing skills will also be reviewed as related to drawing the portrait. Students will be encouraged to explore new ways of seeing and drawing by looking at historical and contemporary approaches to portraiture. (Class will include a model fee directly paid to the instructor.)
