Explore the color palettes and working methods of various artists from Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Thailand and India. Inspired by international artists and their methods, we will adapt them to our own personal use and style. Utilizing 300lb watercolor paper, students can work on a different painting each day or work on one larger painting all week and, if you are so inclined, paint plein air in the garden adjoining the classroom. With 300lb paper one can create an explosion of light and color on the page facilitated by the copious amounts of water and paint used to move the paint across the page. The class will experiment with layering approaches and work to develop unique strategies to create an image that utilizes watercolor’s elusive qualities of spontaneity and transparency. Lectures will address layering sequences, color placement, paint qualities and use of the water element to create light and freshness. We will then progress to making color decisions as they relate to the overall design of the painting.
