Description

This intensive studio class offers a carefully orchestrated setting to engage students in the understanding of pictorial concerns, as well as challenge participants to go beyond a literal, naturalistic description and not to dwell on “how to” paint the figure. Learning to see and how to shape a graphic response are the first steps. Students will focus on pictorial structure, composition, and expanding observational skills; which will allow the focus of the art to include not just the model, but the surrounding studio space. Shils will guide participants through a series of exercises and explorations to understand that abstraction – composition with shape and color – is THE foundation behind all painting. Considerable emphasis is placed on drawing for its own sake and not as something that “sits” under a painting. Daily demonstrations as well as analyzing the work of master painters will serve to deepen personal understanding and direction in one’s own work. Students will work both independently and collaboratively on assignments. The workshop will open with a 90 minute public slide lecture at Concord Art on the evening of Thursday, June 2 at 6:30pm.
